If all goes to plan, I should be in Basel, Switzerland this day next week. It will be my first trip outside India (I know! Right?) and if I were half the man I used to be I’d be a lot more excited. Anyhow, that’s not where I was headed with this.
What I wanted from y’all (haven’t used that in a while) is any advice from anyone who has been to Basel, or knows about the place. I will probably have one Sunday free for sightseeing only (it’s a working visit), plus evenings, post five PM. Any and all advice/cues would be welcome. I planned to visit Augusta Raurica, an old Roman town near Basel that was unearthed in the 70s. Anything within an hour’s drive maybe? Lakes? Vistas? Any advice on how to spend evenings?
Thank you in advance and I promise toΒ bore you all with pics if I return in one piece!

About hbhatnagar
I need to fill this up with much better content than I had populated it with earlier. Why I write a blog maybe? I started blogging in 2009 or thereabouts. I was a newly turned atheist and wanted to converse with others of the same persuasion. We're not exactly a big population group in India! It didn't go very well and I sort of lost interest, posting a few things now and then.
I got a lot more regular over the last few months and have been posting almost daily since February '15. There were many reasons why I gradually became more regular in posting, but one way or the other, here I am! So this blog has taken shape, being at different points in time my showcase, my comedy club, my art gallery, my book club, my therapist, my close friend, my innermost self....but always my little corner of the world. You are all welcome to visit and I hope you stay awhile!
A few points about me because I don't want to lead anyone on(and trust me this does become an issue more often than I'd care to admit).
I'm Indian, the brown-skinned variety; if race, ethnicity or skin colour is an issue, you don't have to get to know me any more than what you see on my blog.
I'm 40, so if age is an issue, please be informed accordingly.
I was a doctor, an ophthalmic surgeon for 10 years before I quit practice.
Never been to Switzerland but I’m sure you will have tons of beautiful places to visit. A pity your plane won’t stop in Toulouse on the way π

I have been only two cities in Switzerland, but not Basel. Beautiful mountain scenes, I remember.
Have a great time. Come back in one piece, please, Dr. Hb, cause I want to see your photos. π π

Some general advice about Europe : 1. Its pretty cold now, as I am just back from Munich where it is 9* , so Basel is expected to be cold. 2. Switzerland is very expensive, but usually the day cards work pretty well if you have a whole day to roam around, you will get public transport free and discounts in Museums , (as at least I know about Zurich, most prob Basel will be similar) 3. You may like to carry an umbrella, its raining all over the Europe for past week. 4. Get a map from the tourist office/ or central station, it will help you a lot. It is not like India you can ask someone and he will leave his work to show you the way. I will ping you if I remember anything more π

How to spend evenings?
Well Switzerland is pretty expensive.
You’ll probably have spent all your evenings by noon of the second day.
(A pretty week pun, I know).
Bon Voyage.

The trip’s all paid by the company so I have some to splurge, but on what? That’s the question. Thanks though! π

I just wanted to crack the pun.
Open a bank account, Indians usually do that in Switzerland.
