This week’s challenge is….
Do you buy your books at physical bookstores (like B&N)
OR
Do you buy them online (from places similar to Amazon)
I’ve been buying from flipkart and amazon for over an year now. I refuse to spend 10k at a bookstore and have the owner refuse me a 5% discount (that’s you, The English Book Shop!); I’ve been buying from that store since I was a kid! Another store I was a regular at refused to order a Carl Sagan book for me and even refused to keep my number so he could call me if the book ever became available (that’s you, Capital Book Depot and I’m happy you had to move into smaller quarters and rent out the space to a bloody Nike! :P). I started with buying books that weren’t available in India and progressed to buying them all online.
What I miss most about buying from stores is marking them. I’d sign on the first page, put my name on the second, and on the third I would ink the date and the place I bought the book from. So it’s nice to open a book and see that I bought it from Madurai railway station, or Oxford book store in Calcutta or Higginbotham’s in Bangalore. I still carry on the tradition but the flavour is missing ; they’re all from flipkart or amazon…….

About hbhatnagar
I need to fill this up with much better content than I had populated it with earlier. Why I write a blog maybe? I started blogging in 2009 or thereabouts. I was a newly turned atheist and wanted to converse with others of the same persuasion. We're not exactly a big population group in India! It didn't go very well and I sort of lost interest, posting a few things now and then.
I got a lot more regular over the last few months and have been posting almost daily since February '15. There were many reasons why I gradually became more regular in posting, but one way or the other, here I am! So this blog has taken shape, being at different points in time my showcase, my comedy club, my art gallery, my book club, my therapist, my close friend, my innermost self....but always my little corner of the world. You are all welcome to visit and I hope you stay awhile!
A few points about me because I don't want to lead anyone on(and trust me this does become an issue more often than I'd care to admit).
I'm Indian, the brown-skinned variety; if race, ethnicity or skin colour is an issue, you don't have to get to know me any more than what you see on my blog.
I'm 40, so if age is an issue, please be informed accordingly.
I was a doctor, an ophthalmic surgeon for 10 years before I quit practice.
Better to still buy online…the shops concept will soon be over (as is the case with newspapers)!

It probably will be over, though that might not necessarily be a good thing…

I’ve tried them but can’t seem to enjoy e-books. I want that feel of paper in my hand. 🙂

Hey! Thanks for joining in, I think it’s awesome that you write the date and place that you buy your books in them. That’s a genius idea!

Thanks, and I loved the question when I read it on vrushali’s blog; I had to answer it! It’s a great idea but I got it from my grandfather. It’s nice to know he bought such and such book from Connaught Place, New Delhi! 🙂

Most of my books I but from my local library! I fill up an entire big plastic bag for just $1. Some new books, many older books. I also but books from Barnes & noble. I love to stroll the aisles, flip to the back of a page to read the descriptions. I also enjoy looking at the book Art up close!

I miss that too, but our local bookshop owners soured the taste for me and now I’m so used to ordering online…

I hate when someone ruins something enjoyable!

That is true! I also find it very difficult to buy books that are not available in India. This is where online shopping wins!

You should try ordering more. I’ve never gotten a single one in damaged condition.

Yes, now I’m thinking of ordering online only. Actually my father got a pair of sunglasses defected so I guess that’s why I didn’t think of buying that way.

I’ve bought everything from cloth pins to furniture online and I’ve hardly ever regretted it. Try ordering from the better e-tailers and you will be pleasantly surprised. 🙂
