Potatoes

Not a popular topic maybe, but given the ubiquity of potatoes in our diet, this deserves a read. šŸ™‚

The Art of Health

Potatoes have the ability to transform any food preparation into a mouth-watering delicacy, be it curry, parathas, salads… šŸ˜‹ In fact, it’s hard to believe that potatoes were not a part of Indian cuisine till about a few centuries ago when we were introduced to them courtesy the Portuguese in the early 17th century.

However, due to their carb content, and many dieticians asking people to cut potatoes from their diet in order to lose weight, they have got a bad reputation.šŸ™…ā€ā™€ļø

So, let’s put ourselves and potatoes out of our collective misery – potatoes are not unhealthy. They contain fiber, potassium, Vitamins B and C, and a number of phytochemicals (miracle chemicals that I keep talking about). They have a higher percentage of carb compared to other vegetables, yes, but eliminating chips, biscuits, sugary treats (basically processed ā€œfoodā€) is a far better strategy health-wise than eliminating potatoes. About hbhatnagar

I need to fill this up with much better content than I had populated it with earlier. Why I write a blog maybe? I started blogging in 2009 or thereabouts. I was a newly turned atheist and wanted to converse with others of the same persuasion. We're not exactly a big population group in India! It didn't go very well and I sort of lost interest, posting a few things now and then. I got a lot more regular over the last few months and have been posting almost daily since February '15. There were many reasons why I gradually became more regular in posting, but one way or the other, here I am! So this blog has taken shape, being at different points in time my showcase, my comedy club, my art gallery, my book club, my therapist, my close friend, my innermost self....but always my little corner of the world. You are all welcome to visit and I hope you stay awhile! A few points about me because I don't want to lead anyone on(and trust me this does become an issue more often than I'd care to admit). I'm Indian, the brown-skinned variety; if race, ethnicity or skin colour is an issue, you don't have to get to know me any more than what you see on my blog. I'm 40, so if age is an issue, please be informed accordingly. I was a doctor, an ophthalmic surgeon for 10 years before I quit practice.

  2. Haven’t had potatoes that were not disguised as French fries in ages. I go to the supermarket almost every day, but I couldn’t tell you where to find the potatoes. 😭 Mind you, I always hang out where the green stuff is – kale, coriander, spinach. So I think I’m okay? šŸ˜† (I’m not)

    • I have potatoes in some form or another (not fries though) at least thrice a week; INdian would be shocked to know their ancestors hadn’t heard of potatoes until about 4 centuries ago, it’s that deeply integrated in our cuisines. šŸ˜€
      I thkn you’re ok. šŸ˜‰

  3. Mashed pottatoes and steamed veges … the quickest meal. Guilty of having it once too often. Grin.
