Mindfulness is a word that gets thrown about a lot, but what exactly is it?
#jonkabatzinn, the founder of mindfulness based stress-reduction (MBSR) program, defines it as “The awareness that arises from paying attention, on purpose, in the present moment and non-judgmentally”.🦋
Purposely directing our attention to the present moment, again and again, is the more obvious part. Making a regular practice of it goes a long way in keeping our minds calm and centered.🦋
The more difficult part is to do so non-judgmentally, as an observer. Most of the times we do not realize that we are judging ourselves constantly: I am not good enough, I look fat, I could have done more for this relationship, I don’t have good friendships – the incessant chatter goes on!🦋
Developing a compassionate attitude towards ourselves can provide a relief from this chatter, and can hone our mindfulness skill!🦋
