Heidelberg – 31

The display at the Deutsch Apotheken Muesum at Heidelberg also boasts a vast collection of various herbs, roots, and other various plant bits and minerals and what not; stuff used for preparing medicinal solutions/infusions/salves/powders. A glimpse of some of these follows in these few posts.

Apart from the endless line of plant parts, minerals and chemicals were also used for preparing medicine: sulphur, lead, mercury, arsenic, iron, silver, gold; these names come readily to mind. Many of these are now known to be toxic in high concentrations but their empirical effects in some cases led to their widespread use.

Some iron and copper ores and preparations on display.

About hbhatnagar

I need to fill this up with much better content than I had populated it with earlier. Why I write a blog maybe? I started blogging in 2009 or thereabouts. I was a newly turned atheist and wanted to converse with others of the same persuasion. We're not exactly a big population group in India! It didn't go very well and I sort of lost interest, posting a few things now and then. I got a lot more regular over the last few months and have been posting almost daily since February '15. There were many reasons why I gradually became more regular in posting, but one way or the other, here I am! So this blog has taken shape, being at different points in time my showcase, my comedy club, my art gallery, my book club, my therapist, my close friend, my innermost self....but always my little corner of the world. You are all welcome to visit and I hope you stay awhile! A few points about me because I don't want to lead anyone on(and trust me this does become an issue more often than I'd care to admit). I'm Indian, the brown-skinned variety; if race, ethnicity or skin colour is an issue, you don't have to get to know me any more than what you see on my blog. I'm 40, so if age is an issue, please be informed accordingly. I was a doctor, an ophthalmic surgeon for 10 years before I quit practice.

  1. Hubby and I seriously “attempt” to understand and apply Homeopathy and some of the Remedies are from poisons. Yikes! Just fascinating how so much in Nature can be used for healing purposes IF we know how to use those things. Happy Friday, Dr. Hb! 🌻

    • Nature is a great storehouse…. Few are willing to study it though, and certainly none of the major pharmaceutical companies!

      • So true! We are learning, Dr. Hb, things that the Homeopathic Vets don’t know. Even they have it wrong. I was told because I am a Healer walking the road less traveled I will be working in the “dark” really not knowing what I am doing. Why? I’m attempting to discover ways of Healing not presently known. Scary. Hard. Learning how to listen to my “hunches” and pray they are right. Exhausting. But SO worth it when I do nail it. And then even that information needs improvement. There is just so much to learn that it makes my head spin. 😜

      • I feel that healing is one of those fields where we ought to step with the greatest care, with one false step we can do so much harm… there was this old family near where I live who had a hand-me-down formula for an asthma drug – herbs and what not (ayurvedic, traditional Indian medicine). They offered the concoction for clinical research and it was actually as good as most oral formulations in the market, with fewer side effects. No one’s heard about it ever since…

      • Dr. Hb, how sad but oh so typical due to the greed and corruption of the pharmaceutical companies. We work with cats and let me tell you the huge responsibilities riding on our shoulders are at times soul shattering and how careful we are because of them. To harm another even unintentionally just about kills me yet with the knowledge we do have we know how to reverse an adverse effect. I tread with the utmost care and still make mistakes. To be actually having this conversation with a medical doctor amazes me because most of whom I know tend to act as if they have all the answers when in truth I know they too are “practicing”. Oh when we get something right after years of study and application make me want to shout from the highest mountain. The work we do is not even recognized as valuable because it is not mainstream medicine. I could talk your ear off. This conversation means so much to me. Thank you. I’m an RN but no longer believe in the medical system. I work so hard to find healing outside of it. Oh yes medicine does have its value in some ways but the system is so abused. I best stop here. I could write a book.

      • I’d agree with you on most points here, but you’re right, we could write a book on this. 😀
